Joanna Sanderson founded Zena & Rose, a printmaking and pattern design studio based in Chiswick, London.

She has developed her own style of wood block prints onto paper and textiles, employing a centuries-old technique with contemporary application.

The printmaking process combines new wood blocks with those salvaged from the textile industry. The blocks are made from sheesham wood, a sustainably managed hardwood. The use of natural materials, such as calico, linen and jute, intentionally links back to the textile origin of wood block printing.

For the Creative Mile Joanna’s work focusses on her PASSION for wood block printing.

Her mission is to raise awareness of this technique in a world where slow hand-made crafts are easily overshadowed by fast digitally printed textiles. This links into the wider concepts of how traditional crafts can be reinterpreted for the modern day, how to embrace sustainability in craft, and how to communicate messages through textiles.
