Celia Pickering
I’m a self-taught Birmingham artist now living and working in Grove Park, West London.
When I’m not painting, I’m a mother and an independent art teacher.
During lockdown my art journey began and with emulsion easily accessible, it sparked my affinity with its domesticity and interior-ready palettes. I enjoy the large pre-mixed palette and the speed at which it dries. I paint on handmade rag cotton papers, which offer a wonderfully textured woollen surface and rough edges. The journey of the handmade paper from India, gives my paintings extra character and strength. Its rough edges and my controlled technique, offer a subtle contrast.
My large-scale paintings explore deeply personal themes rooted in my nostalgia and identity. My home studio, with its mid-century aesthetic, vintage finds, holiday prints, and memories, continually inspires me and evokes emotions in my work. I hope my vibrant and colourful works evoke personal connections and moments of joy for my viewers.
